LUXEMBOURG – Nearly one third of Luxembourgers living abroad live in the United States, in Brazil or in Argentina.
According to figures, published Monday by the Ministry of Justice, 11,904 people obtained Luxembourgish nationality in 2023, following procedures of naturalization, option and recovery. Among them, there are 4,404 living in Brazil and 936 on the territory of the United States. Thus, from 2008 to 2023, 40,641 people requested Luxembourgish nationality, of which 12,269 in Brazil and 3,797 in the United States.

For Daniel Atz, founder of LuxCitizenship, these figures are however far from reality. “The ministry only counts adults,” argues the entrepreneur. “Moreover,” he adds, “under the terms of the Luxembourg nationality law, many are those who are Luxembourgers de facto, who have never lost Luxembourgish nationality and who are entitled to it on a simple request by mail.”

Basing himself on the National Register of Natural Persons, Daniel Atz estimates at 27,632 the Luxembourgers living in Brazil, and at 14,972 those on the territory of the United States, that is, together, more than the population of Esch-sur-Alzette. Thus, according to the expert in international affairs, and by adding Argentina (541 persons), “the American continent hosts 31% of all Luxembourgers living abroad (43,145 out of 137,392).”
Better, Brazil is situated just behind France in the ranking of countries hosting the most Grand-Ducal nationals (27,632 against 32,925), and is ahead of the other countries bordering Luxembourg, Belgium (27,212) and Germany (20,446).
